Performance Appraisal


Most organisations have some form of performance appraisal. Systems will range from the casual and informal to the very detailed and rigorous. Health, Safety and Environmental Managers are in safety critical roles; people’s lives depend on them. Hence it is should be essential to ensure that review their performance on a regular basis.

This section is designed to help you design and prepare a performance appraisal programme for Managers and Supervisors and others with full or partial responsibilities for Health, Safety and Environmental Management responsibilities on sites where minerals are being extracted and processed. Sites will normally be covered by the Quarry Regulations (1999) but may also be marine sites where materials are being dredged.

Performance appraisal is the process by which the performance of employees in their work role is reviewed by a line manager or HR professional. It is normal for this to be done on a periodic basis but the cycle will vary from quarterly to annually, depending on the organisation’s systems and preferences.

Most larger organisations will have established appraisal systems and there are a number of proprietary document and on–line systems on the market to choose from. a few examples of the latter are listed in the Bibliography.
