This section is designed to help you design and prepare CPD programmes for Managers and Supervisors and others with full or partial responsibilities for Health, Safety and Environmental Management responsibilities on sites where minerals are being extracted and processed. Sites will normally be covered by the Quarry Regulations (1999) but may also be marine sites where materials are being dredged.
CPD has become a key issue. This is in response to a number of pressures and demands, notably the needs to:
- maintain competence to cope with changing demands and working practices
- enhance and widen skills and expertise
- provide evidence of competence and ongoing learning
- be part of regulatory and registration requirements
- contribute to a positive image of and confidence in the profession/ industry
The generally accepted definition of CPD is:
" The systematic maintenance, improvement and broadening of knowledge and skills and the execution of professional duties throughout a practitioner's working life."
All organisations have an interest in their employees’ continuing development, particularly as it relates to enhancing their performance at work. However, CPD has many facets and individuals will wish to follow learning pathways not always of relevance to their current job. In developing a CPD framework and policy within the organisation, a balance must be struck between current and career development needs of interest and relevance to the organisation and career and personal development activities that are primarily of interest and value to the employee.
CPD is not just about training it is also about:
- Self-development
- Experiential learning
- Sharing and comparing ideas
- Experience and knowledge with others
- Participation in activities that build character and confidence
- Continuing professional development is an ongoing process for all employees and starts at the initial induction of recruits.
This part of the toolkit will help you:
- Review guidance on best practice in Continuing Professional Development (CPD)
- Prepare a training framework for the CPD process
- Design CPD programmes to meet individual needs
- Preparing training materials
- Also, review the effectiveness of the CPD process
